Waffle Grilled Cheese Twist (Printable Version)

A crispy waffle-pressed sandwich with melted cheese and buttery bread, perfect for a quick snack.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread

01 - 4 slices sandwich bread (white, whole wheat, or sourdough)

→ Cheese

02 - 4 slices cheddar cheese or any good melting cheese (Gruyère, mozzarella, Swiss)

→ Butter

03 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened

→ Optional Add-ins

04 - 2 slices tomato
05 - 2 slices cooked bacon
06 - 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

# Directions:

01 - Heat the waffle maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.
02 - Spread a thin layer of softened butter on one side of each bread slice.
03 - Place two slices of bread buttered side down; top each with two cheese slices and optional add-ins if desired.
04 - Top each with remaining bread slices, buttered side up, forming two sandwiches.
05 - Place one sandwich into the preheated waffle maker, close the lid gently, and press lightly. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until golden brown and cheese is melted.
06 - Cook the second sandwich following the same procedure.
07 - Allow sandwiches to cool for 1 minute, then slice and serve hot.

# Additional Tips::

01 -
  • The waffle maker creates ridges that somehow make the cheese melt unevenly in the most delicious way, with crunchy edges and soft centers.
  • It comes together in ten minutes flat, making it perfect for when you're hungry but not in the mood to fuss.
  • You can dress it up with bacon or tomato, or keep it simple—it works either way.
02 -
  • If your waffle maker has a non-stick coating, don't butter it—just butter the bread. A buttered waffle maker will make the whole thing greasy.
  • The smell of melting cheese and browning butter tells you more than a timer ever will; trust your nose and eyes over the minutes.
03 -
  • If you like extra flavor, brush the butter with a pinch of garlic powder or dried herbs before the sandwich hits the waffle maker.
  • Make sure your waffle maker plates are clean and dry before you start; any crumbs from last time will burn and stick to your sandwich.
