Smoked Gouda Apple Grilled (Printable Version)

Buttery bread surrounds smoky Gouda cheese and crisp apple slices for a warm, flavorful bite.

# What You'll Need:

→ Bread & Dairy

01 - 4 slices sourdough bread or country-style bread
02 - 115 grams smoked Gouda cheese, sliced
03 - 28 grams unsalted butter, softened

→ Fruit

04 - 1 small crisp apple (e.g., Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), cored and thinly sliced

→ Optional Additions

05 - 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
06 - Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

# Directions:

01 - Spread a thin layer of butter on one side of each bread slice.
02 - Place the buttered side down on a clean surface.
03 - If using, spread Dijon mustard on the unbuttered side of two bread slices.
04 - Distribute half the smoked Gouda slices evenly over the mustard-coated bread slices.
05 - Arrange the thin apple slices evenly atop the cheese, then cover with the remaining Gouda. Season with freshly ground black pepper if desired.
06 - Top with the remaining two bread slices, buttered side facing outward.
07 - Warm a large skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
08 - Place sandwiches on the skillet and cook 3 to 4 minutes per side, pressing lightly with a spatula, until bread is golden brown and cheese fully melted.
09 - Remove from heat, allow to cool briefly, then slice and serve warm.

# Additional Tips::

01 -
  • The smoky cheese balances the crisp apple in a way that feels restaurant worthy but takes 20 minutes
  • Perfect for those days when you need comfort food but want to elevate the ordinary
  • The texture contrast between melted cheese and fresh apple makes every bite interesting
02 -
  • Medium low heat is your friend here, high heat burns the bread before the cheese melts
  • Thin apple slices are crucial or they will not soften enough during cooking
  • Letting the sandwiches rest for even 2 minutes makes them easier to slice cleanly
03 -
  • Use a cast iron skillet if you have one, it holds heat evenly and creates the best crust
  • Mayo can be swapped for butter on the outside bread for an even crispier finish
